For the first time, there will also be a Passat with plug-in hybrid drive system.

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat (formerly known as the Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan, or NMS[1] while under development) is a mid-sized sedan which replaces the previous-generation Passat B6 in the North American market. The model is also shipped overseas to South Korea. The Passat NMS was officially announced in January 2011 at the Detroit Auto Show. Built at the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant, the new Passat allows building and shipping costs to be reduced significantly over its predecessor making it more competitive to offerings from competitors at the $20K mark.

The VW Passat NMS is part of Volkswagen Group’s strategy to sell upwards of 800,000 vehicles per year in the North American market. The vehicle was developed by Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive and Volkswagen Passenger Cars, and is partially based on the PQ46 platform used by the European Passat. From nose to tail, it measures 191.6 inches, growing 4 inches from the European model and features a stretched 110.4-inch wheelbase and 72.2-inch width, which allows for class-leading rear legroom in the Mid-Sized class.
2014: Changes to the American market NMS VW Passat for 2014 include the engine upgrade of the out dated in-line 5 cylinder beging replaced by a modern 1.8 liter turbo charged in-line 4 cylinder; Volkswagen says it’s gradually phasing out the 2.5-liter 5 cylinder unit altogether. The new engine delivers 170 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. Compared to the 2.5-liter, horsepower is the same, but the 1.8 offers a bit more torque. Fuel-economy offers significant highway fuel mileage gains over the 2.5-liter unit. The 2014 Passat also now uses electro-mechanical steering, instead of the previous hydraulic setup.
A plug-in hybrid version, the Passat GTE, will be unveiled during the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The VW Passat GTE will be sold in two versions, sedan and station wagon, with deliveries scheduled to begin in Europe in the second half of 2015.

The Passat shares the same plug-in hybrid powertrain used in both the Volkswagen Golf GTE and the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, but the Passat has a larger battery pack.[26] The VW Passat GTE has a 9.9 kWh lithium-ion battery capable of an all-electric range of 50 km (31 mi) and a total range of 965 km (600 mi). The plug-in hybrid has a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous 85 kW electric motor, which together with a 1.4-liter TSI gasoline-powered engine delivers a fuel economy of 2.0 l/100 km (140 mpg-imp; 120 mpg-US) equivalent on the New European Driving Cycle, corresponding to CO
2 emissions lower than 45g/km. Top speed is 219 km/h (136 mph).[26][27] The Passat GTE is set to go on sale in the UK in mid-2015, with deliveries expected in October 2014.
